This cisterciensian monastery was built in 1341 in Certosa –  in the outskirts of Florence. Since then it has made a profound impact on modern architecture.  Especially due to Le Corbuisier’s visit im 1910: “I saw, in the harmonious countryside of Tuscany, a modern city crowning the top of a hill” –  The  complex of monk dormitories on the hill top inspired him deeply. Certosa gave him  ideas on how to organize his own urban apartment visions.   Leif Grung was deeply inspired by Le Corbuisier. This  might have been the reason for his Certosa-visit in 1921.  During the visit he  made the sketch  above.
